Board members cite Utah’s need for a New Music scene as their motivation, “I and a number of other Utah-based composers have decided that Utah desperately needs a New Music scene.  We couldn’t live here one more day without it.  To fill this dearth, we founded The Salty Cricket Composers Collective,” says executive director M. Ryan Taylor (composer of the opera Abinadi).

“Our mission is to enrich Utah's cultural life by providing performances of Utah composers' work, facilitating the exchange of ideas and resources among Utah composers, and educating the public about new music,” states board member Rick Mortensen.

Composers featured on the February 23rd program include BYU’s Christian Asplund, Rick Mortensen, Gary Gerber, UBA, Rebeca Dawn, M. Ryan Taylor, and Crystal Young-Otterstrom.  “I don’t know about you, but I get tired of the bar and movie scene.  Try something different, experience the collective,” says board member Heidi Schmidt (also Marketing Director for Repertory Dance Theatre).  Treasurer Rebeca Dawn adds, “New Music is extremely diverse.  Anything goes.  At the Collective, you’ll hear everything from the avant-garde to Latin Quips to a musical about German boxer Max Schmelling.”

Tickets are a suggested donation of $20, $10 for students.  Tickets are available at www.saltycricket.org or at the door of the concert. “Because we’re poor composers, we don’t charge a ticket fee, just a suggested donation of $20, $10 for students.  If you can’t afford that, then contribute what you can!  For the 2008 season we will have concerts on February 23, June 22, and October TBA,” states development director John Newman.
