The monthly OUT/EX film series continues with a special screening of Turkish Star Wars, one of the most legendary international STAR WARS rip-off films of all time! The film will be projected in its entirety…in Turkish…no subtitles. Don't worry, this incredibly OUTSIDER and BIZARRE film will be augmented by the improvisational and atmospheric sounds of Add Oil, an SLC based noise-jazz combo that fuses sax, drums, synth, and prerecorded soundscapes into the aural equivalent on Iron Pyrite.

THE PROBLEM: As the Sundance Film Festival descends on Park City and parts of Salt Lake City, cineastes, art-film aficionados, and local filmmakers comb through festival guides to separate the "Indie-esque" studio films and the sure-to-be-sold-to-a-major-studio films from the films they really want to see... the ones that will never come to Utah again...the true "fringe" films, the one-of-a-kind art films, experimental films and avant-garde wonders that bear no commercial potential, but are beautiful and unique and stunning in their vision. Of course, these are few and far between, and one normally has to sit through about ten or eleven bad films at Sundance to discover that one gem of experimental cinema.

OUR SOLUTION: Attend the January screening of OUT/EX! OUT/EX is a local film series devoted to all genres of fringe filmmaking. Each month we hand-select film and video works that would, quite literally, never be shown in any local theatres. This stunning selection of experimental shorts is as good that of any film festival and we invite you to escape your Sundance woes by attending this FREE, LOCAL, and INSPIRING exhibit of true experimental genius from around the world. Local filmakers Jan Andrews and Tyrone Davies will be in attendance.

ONE FRAME AT A TIME

Saturday, June 16, 2007

An homage to the filmstrip! Do you remember the filmstrips you saw as an elementary school student? Your teacher would advance the frame with each beep of the cassette tape (or record)... you would draw doodles on your school desk in the dark... and the filmstrip would drone on about the merits of hygiene, or reading, or manners, etc... Well... Brooklyn filmmaker, composer, and furniture-maker Brian Dewan has created a good number of his own filmstrips... Educational?... maybe. Funny?... definitely!. Twisted?... ABSOLUTELY! Dewan has had many exhibitions at Brooklyn's super-hot "Pierogi" Gallery and even more exhibitions at film fests and arts events across the world.

And just to send you back to those days when you day-dreamed your education away, SLC's own Lost Media Archive will present a handful of REAL and TRULY BIZARRE filmstrips from bygone decades.

Program 4:

MONDO FABULOSO

Saturday, May 19, 2007

This fourth installment of OUT/EX will focus on short works by outsider art-film directors. These attempts at video-art and experimental film are sure to entertain in unexpected ways. By definition, outsider artists come from the far left of left field and sometimes operate under a whole different set of criteria. If you have ever taken a film theory class, forget everything you may have learned. These films and video clips will break all conventions! OUT/EX champions works that can confuse, entertain and induce laughter all at the same time… Many of the selections in this program are provided by the Lost Media Archive, a collection of truly unforgettable, but sadly unseen media.
