Movement Forum

Movement Forum was founded in 2003 by Graham Brown as a means to investigate the use of dance improvisation as a performance art. Its eight company members come from various professional and collegiate backgrounds in modern dance, and have performed and taught nationally and internationally. Over the past three years, Movement Forum has progressed into a unified group with a diverse dynamic and a keen understanding of one another.

Movement Forum began performing throughout Salt Lake City in public places including the Gallivan Center, Downtown Farmers Market, and the Downtown Public Library Plaza. These street performances paved the way for several performance commissions by such organizations as the American College Dance Festival Association, Downtown Alliance First Night, Chesapeake Dance Theatre, and Centered City Yoga. In 2004, Movement Forum received funding from the University of Utah College of Fine Arts and the Department of Modern Dance to perform at the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation in Seattle, WA. Since that time they have continued to present work throughout the Salt Lake valley through organizations including the Utah Arts Festival, Utah Cultural Celebration Center, Salt Lake City Gallery Stroll, Kingsbury Hall presenter's office, Utah Arts Alliance, Paradigm Dance Project, and The Pickle Company. Through generous donations from private donors and local businesses, Movement Forum premiered a new evening length work in August 2006 at the New York International Fringe Festival.

From its inception, Movement Forum has been active in providing the community with an outlet for and instruction in dance improvisation. They have been hosting free, monthly, open-to-the-public improv jams for over two years. In this setting, Movement Forum offers the Wasatch Front an opportunity to experience the thrill of movement within a community that is accepting and receptive to all who attend. Movement Forum is active in presenting classes, lecture/demonstrations, composing performance pieces, and performing with students throughout the state at schools including West High (SLC), Jordan High (South Jordan), Lone Peak High (Highland), Brockbank Junior High (Magna), and the University of Utah Department of Family and Consumer Studies.
